Pravda: How an AI Agent Works, Why Tools Matter, and What Agentic Systems Can Do Today

Artificial intelligence (AI) and agentic systems represent one of the most significant shifts in automation, the management of complex processes, and the more efficient use of tools. With the development of large language models (LLMs), new possibilities are emerging - not only as tools that answer questions, but as autonomous entities capable of independently carrying out complex tasks based on a user’s input and goals. Agents built on LLMs and connected to external tools are becoming a central topic in the modern deployment of AI, both in businesses and in everyday life.

Basic Definition of an AI Agent and the Difference from Traditional Software

The fundamental difference between traditional software and an AI agent lies in the level of autonomy and the ability to handle ambiguous or highly complex tasks. While conventional applications allow users to automate repetitive actions through precisely defined rules, agents are capable of independently handling tasks that require reasoning, working with unstructured data, and making decisions in situations where simple rules are insufficient. An agent is therefore a system that solves tasks autonomously based on its own assessment and decision making.

Under the hood, AI agents are typically powered by a large language model (LLM) that not only understands natural language but can also propose next steps, select from available tools, evaluate outcomes, and revise its own decisions when it encounters problems. An agent does not merely execute commands - it can recognize when a task is complete, when human intervention is required, or when a different method should be used. In case of failure, the agent can interrupt its process and hand control back to the user.

Connecting LLMs and Tools: How Agents Perform Actions

Although a large language model forms the core of an agent, real-world use requires access to tools such as APIs, databases, or software applications. In practice, an agent combines three main components: the model itself (LLM), a set of available tools, and clear instructions or a “system prompt” that defines how the agent should behave.

Tools expand an agent’s capabilities by enabling it to retrieve data from internal systems, perform actions (such as writing to a database or sending messages), or orchestrate multiple agents within a more complex workflow. Modern SDKs (for example, OpenAI’s Agents SDK) allow tools to be defined as standardized functions that an agent can dynamically select based on context. When needed, an agent can invoke multiple tools at once or use another specialized agent as a “tool” within a multi-agent architecture. 

Agent Autonomy and the Core ReAct Principle

A key characteristic of agents is autonomy - the ability to plan and manage multiple steps independently without requiring human intervention at every stage. This principle is often implemented through the ReAct (Reason + Act) pattern, which combines reasoning about the situation with the selection of concrete actions. The agent first analyzes the context and then chooses the most appropriate next step, whether that involves gathering additional information, using a tool, or communicating with the user. 

Basic agent architectures rely on iterative loops in which the LLM proposes an action, selects a tool, and then evaluates the result. This cycle repeats until the agent determines that the goal has been achieved or that human assistance is required. More advanced agentic systems support orchestration of multiple agents - for example, one agent may act as a “manager” coordinating specialized sub-agents, or agents may delegate tasks to one another dynamically based on current needs.

Safety Measures and Human Oversight

When deploying agents, it is essential to implement robust safeguards to protect against data leakage, system misuse, or undesirable outputs. Safety mechanisms (guardrails) may include detection of malicious inputs (such as prompt injection), filtering of personally identifiable information (PII), regular evaluation of output relevance, or restricting agent capabilities based on the risk level of a given action. High risk tasks should ideally be reviewed by a human before execution through a Human in the Loop (HITL) approach, or agents should be configured to hand over control when uncertainty or errors arise.

Managing Agentic AI Systems in Practice

As agents become more autonomous, governance and oversight become just as important as their technical capabilities. Effective management of agentic systems relies on a combination of reliability evaluation, access control, and interpretability of behavior. Agents should only be deployed in contexts where their behavior has been validated under conditions similar to real world operation, especially for tasks with financial or security implications. A clearly defined permission scope and approval checkpoints are essential before irreversible actions are executed.

An agent’s ability to understand the boundaries of its authority is just as important as its intelligence. The system should be able to pause its own operation, request confirmation, or safely terminate execution when necessary.

Transparency and traceability significantly reduce risk. Every agent action should be logged, explainable, and auditable so that failures can be quickly diagnosed. In more complex deployments, layered oversight can be effective - for example, a simpler monitoring model may continuously check whether an agent is operating within its assigned scope. The core principle remains accountability and control: users or organizations must always be able to stop an agent, revoke its access, and restore the system to a safe state. These principles form the foundation of trustworthy agentic architectures, where the benefits of autonomy are balanced by clear responsibility and predictable behavior.
